This week I am grateful for the funny things that my five-year-old says. This morning, for example, she heard her grandma complain about moving around the house like a kangshi (Korean word for jiangshi – Chinese hopping vampire) because grandpa is making a traditional wooden partition from scratch at home instead of going to a craftsman. She’d never heard of hopping vampires before and assumed that grandma’s surname is Kang (XXX-shi in Korean means family line of XXX) which happens to be one of the top ten most common surnames in Korea. She responded with comic timing that “I am a [her actual surname]” and we all had a good laugh.
